Life in the trenches
Life in the trenches was miserable and dangerous. Depending on the season it was either bone-chilling cold or scorching heat or constant rain and mud. Uniforms quickly became filthy and infested in lice. Rodents were all over the place. Diseases such as trench foot were common. Fear was constant as soldiers never knew when the enemies might stage a surprise raid or all out attack. Even between battles the troops weren't safe, snipers from each side tried to pick off enemy soldiers and lob grenades into enemy trenches.
