What are trenches
World War I was typified by its lack of movement and this was mostly a result of the building of trenches. Trenches were deep, narrow ditches with barbed wire strung out in front to protect against incoming enemy raids. The soil in Belgium was chalky and easily dug which made for quick building however the walls were weak and had to be reinforced with wood and sand bags(Breastworks)The bottom of the trenches were filled with water and mud due to constant rain, this often caused trench foot.Gradually these trenches were joined together to make a long line of defense Eventually on the Western Front there were two lines of trenches that ran from Belgium in the west, to Switzerland in the east.
